One
of August Wilson's shatteringly beautiful Pittsburgh Cycle plays, Joe Turner's Come and Gone follows the stories
of inhabitants of a black boardinghouse in Pittsburgh in 1911. The characters include a cranky proprietor and his
nurturing wife, a conjure man, a traveling peddler, and one of Wilson's most haunting characters, Herald Loomis,
a man searching for his lost wife to make him whole. Each denizen of the boardinghouse has a different relationship
to a past of slavery as well as to the urban present. "Gives haunting voice to the souls of the American dispossessed." "It is Wilson's epic vision, power
and poetic sense that lift Joe Turner to strange and compelling heights." New York Daily News "A
lovely, moving play." New York Post |
